    The Process of Development

    Unlike a calf or a colt who are up on their legs soon after birth and can search their food, human baby is dependent and at the mercy of care takers for at least 4-5 years. The slow process of neuromotor development in human babies is the price we pay for highly evolved and complex brain that we are endowed with. Human brain is more fascinating experience to watch children grow as they learn new skills and pranks every other week or month. The dependent baby gradually become more independent and interactive to explore the world around him.

    In 11 and 12 Months most Babies need :

    • Solid foods three times a day. By now your baby should be eating a variety of different foods and taking an active role at mealtimes by self-feeding and drinking from a sippy cup.

    • At 11 to 12 months: 22 to 30 ounces of breast milk or formula in a 24-hour period. Beginning at 12 months, your baby can transition to whole cow’s milk and should drink less than 30 ounces a day (more than this can reduce your child’s appetite for other healthy foods and can lead to iron deficiency anemia).

     

    • A little less than 14 hours of sleep in a 24-hour period  this includes nighttime sleep and naps. Two naps during the day (morning and afternoon) is typical, though some babies will move toward just one long nap each day.

    Nutritional requirement of children are much higher than as compared to adults because they have to grow from an average weight of 3kg of birth to over 50kg at adolescence and they spend a lot of energy in their day to day activity.
    For Example- Daily caloric requirement during infancy is about 120kcal/kg compared to 40kcal/kg in adults!

    Khichdi can be considered one of the most nutritious foods for your baby after she or he has been introduced to vegetables and fruits. It’s a one-pot dish for  your family too as khichdi can be prepared anytime.

    I never miss to feed this khichdi to my daughter, what I do is make many variations to it. Will share all my variations in the coming post. And also I never miss to add homemade ghee to the khichdi. Will soon share that recipe too.
